How long it actually is
The September break is nine days on the calendar and ten in practice for most students. Term 3 ends on a Friday, the break runs the following Saturday to Sunday, and Teachers' Day sits on the Friday immediately before it as a scheduled school holiday: Friday 4 September in 2026, and Friday 3 September in 2027, both listed in the MOE calendars for 2026 and 2027. So the last day in school is usually the Thursday, and the hole you have to cover is six working days rather than five. Confirm it against your own school's calendar, because schools also set days off of their own.
Past that extra Friday, the shape matches March: both weekends inside, one ordinary school week in the middle, Term 4 starting on the Monday.
What does not match is what waits on the other side. Term 4 is the examination term. In 2026 the PSLE Listening Comprehension falls on 15 September, the day after Term 4 begins, and the written papers run 24 to 30 September, per SEAB. This break is the last clear stretch in front of that.
What it is good for, and what to skip
Six working days close to home. That is the honest description of the break, and it is also the right plan for it.
September is the break where the destination matters least and the rhythm matters most. A child who comes back rested and still in the habit of sitting down for an hour is in better shape for Term 4 than one who comes back off a long flight. That is not an argument for turning the week into a revision camp, which is the opposite failure and a dependable way to spend nine days arguing.
What to skip: anything that lands late on the Sunday before Term 4 starts. A late flight home the night before the examination term is a bad trade at any fare. Skip the intensive holiday revision course too, unless your child is in a graduating year, because Term 4 has its own scheduled run-up already.

The childcare maths
Five working days inside the break, six once you count the Teachers' Day Friday in front of it.
Like March, this is a break to cover without spending childcare leave, and for the same arithmetic: six days a year per parent, and a year-end break with roughly thirty working days in it is about ten weeks away. There is one household where September has a better claim on a leave day than the arithmetic suggests. If you have a P6 child, the value of the day is not coverage, it is being in the house during the last quiet week before the examination term. That is a different reason to take it, and a good one. What it costs, and when
September is the emptiest Changi gets in the second half of the year, and the worst week of it to go.
On the monthly passenger totals at data.gov.sg, September was the quietest month of the second half of the year twice running: 5.40 million in September 2024 and 5.47 million in September 2025, against December peaks of 6.41 and 6.34 million in those same two years. Only February, a shorter month, ran lower. Fares follow that trough. The reason the month is quiet is the same reason it is quiet for you, since almost no household with a school-age child in Singapore can travel in the middle of Term 4.
If you want the cheap window, use the six days you have and keep the flight short. A trip that eats the Sunday before Term 4 costs more than the fare saves.
Locally the market runs the other way. Attractions and camps price this week as a school holiday, exactly as they do in June, so a nine-day break carries June rates without June's length. Compare the holiday day rate against an ordinary weekday before booking anything ticketed.
