The Childcare Gap, and How to Cover It

Singapore's school holidays run far longer than any working parent's leave. Here is the exact size of the gap in 2026, then the playbook for covering it, cheapest and least leave first.

The gap, per child, in 2026

11.4 weeks / 57 weekdays

of school-holiday weekdays a working-parent household has to cover, after subtracting weekends and the 2 days that already fall on a public holiday.

The four MOE breaks add up to 59 weekdays off school. Public holidays cushion 2 of them, leaving 57 to cover. Childcare leave gives each working parent up to 6 days a year, so even pooled, most of this gap falls to annual leave, holiday camps, or family.

How to cover it: the stack

Work down this list in order. Each rung is cheaper or costs less leave than the one below it. Most households end up using three or four together.

  1. 1

    Count the free days first

Weekends and any public holiday inside a break are already covered, so you only need to solve the weekdays this page counts. Start from the real number, not the whole calendar.

  2. 2

Stagger your leave, don’t stack it

Each working parent of a Singaporean child under 7 gets up to 6 days of childcare leave a year, dropping to 2 days of extended childcare leave once the youngest is 7 to 12, and it is use-it-or-lose-it. The trick is to take different days from your partner, not the same ones. Two parents covering separate days doubles your reach. Spend childcare leave first, then annual leave. The Leave Optimizer shows which days stretch furthest.

  3. 3

Ask for flexi-work on the crunch weeks

Since December 2024, employees can formally request flexible work arrangements. A couple of work-from-home or shifted-hours days a week during a break can cover a lot without spending any leave. Worth asking before you burn annual leave.

  4. 4

Student care holiday programmes for full-day cover

Student care centres run full-day programmes through the holidays. They are the most reliable option when both parents work a full day, and lower-income families can get MSF fee assistance. This is the most under-used lever for consistent, all-day coverage.

  5. 5

ActiveSG and community programmes: the cheap structured option

ActiveSG runs hundreds of low-cost sports sessions across the holidays, and community clubs run subsidised programmes. For pure "somewhere safe and active for the day," these cost a fraction of enrichment camps.

  6. 6

Camps by the week, for the long breaks

Enrichment, adventure and academic camps fill a whole week and are the backbone of a June or year-end plan, but they cost several times more than ActiveSG. Use them where you need the structure, not as default childcare. See the June camps guide.

  7. 7

Family, helper, and a shared rota

Grandparents and helpers carry most Singapore households through the holidays; a swap rota with another family (you take Monday and Tuesday, they take Wednesday and Thursday) can cover a week between two homes for free.

  8. 8

Keep 2 or 3 leave days in reserve

Over a four-week break a camp gets cancelled, a child falls sick, or an arrangement falls through. Don’t plan to zero. Hold a few days back for the inevitable.

A plan for each 2026 break

March Holidays

5 weekdays

Only 5 weekdays, the easy one. A mix of a few staggered leave days, family, and one ActiveSG or community programme usually covers it without a camp.

June Holidays

19 weekdays

The crunch. Anchor most weeks with student care or week-long camps, use ActiveSG for the cheaper weeks, stagger both parents’ leave across the rest, and keep a couple of reserve days. This is where the whole stack earns its keep.

September Holidays

5 weekdays

Only 5 weekdays, the easy one. A mix of a few staggered leave days, family, and one ActiveSG or community programme usually covers it without a camp.

Year-End Holidays

28 weekdays

The crunch. Anchor most weeks with student care or week-long camps, use ActiveSG for the cheaper weeks, stagger both parents’ leave across the rest, and keep a couple of reserve days. This is where the whole stack earns its keep.

The honest shortcuts most parents miss

  • Childcare leave is per parent and use-it-or-lose-it, so take different days from your partner, not the same long weekend, to cover twice as much.
  • Don't pay enrichment-camp prices for what is really childcare: ActiveSG and student care cover the same hours far cheaper.
  • The flexi-work request right is new and under-used. A WFH day or two a week beats spending leave.
  • The year-end break overlaps everyone's own leave and camps thin out near Christmas, so plan it earliest.

Common questions

How many weeks of school holidays are there in 2026?

The MOE calendar has four scheduled breaks (March, June, September and the year-end holidays) totalling about 12 school weeks. 57 of those weekdays are ordinary workdays a working parent has to cover; the rest fall on public holidays.

How much childcare leave do working parents get in Singapore?

Each working parent of a Singaporean child under 7 gets up to 6 days of paid childcare leave a year. Once the youngest child is 7 to 12 it becomes 2 days of extended childcare leave, and with children in both age groups the total is still capped at 6 days per parent. Even pooled across two parents that covers only about two of the crunch weeks. The rest comes out of annual leave, camps, or family help.

Which school holidays are the hardest to cover?

The June and year-end holidays are the crunch: together they are June Holidays and Year-End Holidays, several weeks each. The March and September breaks are one week each and easier to absorb.

What's the cheapest way to cover the school holidays?

Stack the cheap levers before the expensive ones: staggered childcare leave (free), a flexi-work day or two, ActiveSG and community-club programmes (heavily subsidised), and student care for full days. Keep week-long enrichment or adventure camps for where you actually need the structure. They cost several times more for the same hours of cover.

Is there childcare during the school holidays if both parents work full-time?

Yes. Student care centres run full-day holiday programmes that cover the whole working day, and they are the most reliable option for two full-time parents. Lower-income families can apply for MSF student care fee assistance. ActiveSG and community-club holiday programmes cover shorter days more cheaply.

Can I request to work from home during the school holidays?

Since December 2024, employees in Singapore can formally request flexible work arrangements, which your employer must consider properly. A couple of work-from-home or shifted-hours days a week during a break can cover a lot of the gap without spending any leave.
