How long it actually is

The March break is nine calendar days and five working days. It runs Saturday to Sunday in every published calendar, so both weekends sit inside it and the middle is one ordinary school week: 14 to 22 March in 2026, and 13 to 21 March in 2027, per the MOE calendars for 2026 and 2027.

Terms 1 and 2 together make Semester 1, so the break falls inside half a school year rather than between two halves, and nothing closes when Term 1 ends. Since MOE removed mid-year examinations for all primary and secondary levels by 2023, there is no semestral paper waiting on either side of it either. Term 2 picks up where Term 1 stopped.

One asymmetry is worth knowing if you have children at different levels. JC 1 and MI 1 students do not begin Term 1 until early February, Wednesday 3 February in 2027, so by the March break they have had about six weeks of school while a primary-school sibling has had ten. The same nine days off, a very different amount of term behind them.

What it is good for, and what to skip

Five working days is enough for one thing done properly and not enough for two. In practice that is a short regional trip of four or five nights, or a week of day camps, or a genuine do-nothing week. Stacking a trip and a camp into the same five days is the reliable way to come back more tired than you left.

March is also the only break with no national examination anywhere near it. The PSLE oral papers fall in August and the written papers in late September, per SEAB, and the GCE timetables sit in the last quarter of the year. Nothing in March is examination logistics. That makes it the one week where revision is a choice rather than background pressure, and it is worth spending that on purpose instead of letting the week dissolve.

What to skip: long-haul travel, and anything sold on examination readiness. Five weekdays does not repay a long flight, and a March programme priced against the PSLE is charging you for six months of lead time you do not need yet. The childcare maths

Five weekdays to cover, the smallest hole of the year. That is exactly why March is the wrong break to spend leave on.

A working parent of a Singapore Citizen child under seven gets six days of childcare leave a year, three paid by the employer and three by the Government, and it cannot be carried forward or cashed out. The conditions are at MOM and Made For Families. Spend five of those six days here and you arrive at the twenty working days of the June break with one left. Two parents taking one staggered day each covers two of the five, which is the proportionate answer for a week this short.

School-based student care centres run through the holidays and every primary school has one, with subsidies of up to 98 per cent for lower-income households under the Student Care Fee Assistance scheme. Fees vary by centre, so check current rates with yours; MOE explains how to ask.

What it costs, and when

March is not a cheap month to fly. Changi handled 6.09 million passengers in March 2026, more than any other month in the first half of that year and more than that June, on the monthly series published at data.gov.sg. A nine-day window against peak fares is a poor trade unless the destination is close.

The cheaper March is the one spent here. Day camps in a five-day week tend to price by the day rather than the week, so ask for the daily rate before the package rate, because the package usually assumes a longer break. Holiday-period rates differ from term-time ones, so check current prices with the provider.

The other saving is doing less. Five days with two planned outings and three slow ones costs a fraction of five programmed days, and for the one break of the year with nothing waiting behind it, that is not a compromise.
