A long weekend costs nothing when a public holiday lands next to a Saturday. The real prize is the holiday that sits one workday away from the weekend, because a single day of annual leave turns two days off into four or five. Here are the 2027 dates worth planning around, sorted by the thing that decides whether they help a family at all: whether school is in.
Why bridging works
Singapore has eleven public holidays a year. Some fall on a weekend and are quietly wasted. Some fall on a Tuesday or a Thursday, one workday from the weekend, and those are the ones to plan around. Book that one gap day and a normal two-day weekend becomes four. Book two gap days around a midweek holiday and it can become five or more.
Here is the idea in one worked example. A public holiday falls on a Tuesday. Saturday and Sunday are already off, and so is the Tuesday. The only working day in between is the Monday. Book that single Monday of leave, and you get Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday off in a row: four days away for one day of leave. That is the whole trick, repeated around the calendar.
You do not have to work this out by hand. The leave optimizer checks every bridge in the year and ranks them by value. But for a family the ranking is not the whole story, because where the holiday falls in the school year decides whether it is worth anything at all.
Term time is the half that counts
A public holiday during the school holidays is pleasant and buys a parent nothing, because the children are home either way. All eleven are paid holidays for an employee covered by the Employment Act wherever they land, as a day off, a replacement day or a day's pay; what changes is whether the day is any use to you. A public holiday in term time is the one that turns into a family day out or a short trip.
Of 2027's eleven gazetted holidays, nine fall inside a school term when checked against MOE's 2027 term dates. The only two that do not are New Year's Day, on the Friday before Term 1 opens on 4 January, and Christmas Day, in the year-end break. School is shut on both anyway.

All four are in term time, so all four are worth planning around. Everyone else gets them too, so book anything that needs booking early. Where schools close for an extra day, one day of leave on that Tuesday keeps a parent at home for the whole of the children's break (MOE).

The best-value stretch of 2027 is in May
Hari Raya Haji is Monday 17 May 2027 and Vesak Day is Thursday 20 May, both in Term 2, which runs to Friday 28 May (MOE). Book the Tuesday and Wednesday between them and two days of leave buy six days off in a row, Saturday 15 to Thursday 20 May. Add Friday 21 May and three days of leave buy nine, Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 May. The leave days are school days, so the children are in class on them; the two holidays and the weekends are the family days.
Hari Raya Puasa, on Wednesday 10 March, sits two school days before the March break, which runs from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 March. Booking the Thursday and Friday gives an adult five days off, Wednesday to Sunday, but the children are in school on both leave days. The three Saturday holidays
Chinese New Year's first day, Labour Day and Christmas Day all fall on a Saturday in 2027: 6 February, 1 May and 25 December. A Saturday holiday adds no weekday off for an adult, though an employee covered by the Employment Act who does not work Saturdays is owed a day off or a day's pay for each (MOM). Schools do add a weekday: MOE gives Tuesday 9 February, Monday 3 May and Monday 27 December off in lieu (MOE). So Labour Day gives the children a three-day weekend, Saturday to Monday, which a parent matches with one day of leave. The second day of Chinese New Year is the Sunday, which is why Monday 8 February is the gazetted holiday in lieu.
What to do with a long weekend
Three and four-day breaks are made for the short trips that do not justify a whole week of leave.
- A quick regional hop. Batam, Bintan, Johor Bahru, and Kuala Lumpur all work for a three or four-day break. Keep travel time short so the days are spent there, not in transit.
- A staycation at home. A hotel with a pool for a night, or simply a slower few days doing the Singapore things you never get to on a normal weekend.
- Nothing at all. A long weekend spent resting is not a wasted one. The point of finding these dates is to have the option, not to fill every one.
Whatever you choose, the booking rule is the same: the free long weekends are the ones everyone else has spotted too, so the good hotels and cheaper flights go early.
The holidays that move each year
The exact dates of Chinese New Year, Good Friday, the two Hari Raya holidays, Vesak Day and Deepavali shift each year, so the bridges around them change too. Some years they land on a Tuesday or Thursday and hand you a gift; other years they fall on a weekend and pass quietly.
